Applications are due by July 15, 2024. Quotes from mentors!
I enjoy being able to work with and guide someone who just starting on the journey I have been through. Don't underestimate the value of your role! Do it - you will be surprised at how many things you forgot you didn't once upon know the answers to! The value of these pairings definitely goes both ways! Quotes from mentees!
Let your mentors know your goals so they can help you achieve them! Definitely sign up for this program and reach out to your mentors for any issue, even minor (sometimes something minor is behind something more major). I appreciated support from a professor outside of my institution so I could ask some questions pretty freely about relationships and what limits I should put for my responsibilities. I like that there is plenty of room for flexibility in how often/when to meet, but also a clear boundary set on expectations (approx. half an hour a month). |
Program Goals:
The aim of this 9-month program is to provide statistics and data science educators with career advice and mentoring. This can include discussions of teaching/curriculum building, career trajectory, potential research areas in stat/data science education, and other professional goals. Typically, mentors and mentees meet remotely/in person for a 30-minute discussion once a month, though this is flexible depending on mentee goals. Who can get involved?
We welcome all educators in the broader statistical and data science community including, but not limited to, K-12 schools, AP programs, community colleges, undergraduate and graduate programs, industry and government. We also welcome PhD students who will graduate in or before the 2024 / 2025 academic year. We will strive to match individuals who are applying for a job in academia or statistics/data science education, or want other mentoring related to teaching/education work. Important Dates:
Applications will be accepted during Spring and Summer 2024 and the mentoring program will run from August 1, 2024 through June 1, 2025. Applications received by July 15, 2024 will be given priority in matching. Every effort will be made to match those who have applied by July 15! If you have any questions, please contact Allison Theobold (atheobol at calpoly dot edu) Note: To participate in the mentoring program, membership in the ASA Section on Statistics and Data Science Education is required. If you are not a member of the section but would like to join so you may participate in the mentoring program, visit http://amstat.org/asa/membership/home.aspx.
